What to see in the square

Here you can admire the bronze equestrian statue of Cosimo I by Giambologna and the monumental fountain dell'Ammannati. In front of the fountain, near the middle of the square, a disc of granite commemorates the place where Savonarola was hanged and burned with his faithful followers in 1498. The square is home to a copy of Michelangelo's David, the statue of Neptune and the Loggia dei Lanzi, with the famous bronze Perseus.

A bit of history

Founded in the late 13th century, and later expanded with the demolition of the tower-houses of the Uberti, Foraboschi and other powerful Ghibelline families, Piazza della Signoria has always been since the Middle Ages the civic center of Florentine life.
Although it does not retain some of its original buildings and the old terracotta flooring, it remains a place of incomparable beauty and elegance.
Dominated by the 14th-century Palazzo della Signoria, is surrounded by other important buildings, including the Loggia della Signoria and the Uffizi Palace, the sixteenth-century Palazzo Uguccioni and the Palazzo del Tribunale di Mercatanzia which dates back to 1539. The Palazzo delle Assicurazioni Generali on the west side of the square, was built by Landi in 1871.
